“The best Christmas since 1929, was the unqualified statement of prominent Sydney retail traders .when commenting upon the extensive volume of business during the last 10 days before Christmas. Traders generally stated that record crowds of shoppers visited the stores, that there Was a greater number of retail sales than in previous years and that deliveries were heavier than lor many years. It was staled that it it- had not, ueeii for the additional shopping day on Monday, deliveries of the heavy orders on flrinay and Saturday would have been held over, or stocks moved oil Saturday afternoon and night and on Sunday. A feature of the heavy selling this season, it, was stated, was the demand tor higher-priced articles: though the cheaper lines sold more readily than lor veins past. An extraordinarily heavy demand preceding Christinas for Inrniture was, in the, words of a prominent business man, an indication ot a return to prosperous times, owing to the feeling of security and sound finance in government.
In the clothing trade nil liiiproccclcmlc*rl demand for new suits was reported. Several large niamilaeturors were compelled to resort to overtime for several weeks before Christinas to fulfil orders, and the turnover exceeded that in any corresponding period of the last live years,
