DUKE OF KENT

AUSTRALIAN APPOINTMENT ?

DIPLOMATIC ''PEELERS''

MELBOURNE, Jan. 4

The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, declined to comment upon the report that a request had 'been made for the appointment of the Duke of Kent as the next Australian Governor-General

'lnquiries in official circles elicited the information that diplomatic "feelers" had been extended from Australia on the subject, but special circumstances render it impossible tn expect, any official statement on behalf of tlie Commonwealth. Sir Isaac Isaacs, the present Gover-nor-General, who is now SO years of age, retires this year, and does not desire an extension of his term of office.

TO GO TO CANADA ?

REPORT BEING CIRCULATED

OTTAWA, Nov. 14

The i-eport that comes from London of a "strong movement" for the appointment of the Duke of Kent as the next /Governor-General pi Canada ;is not taken very seriously in this country, for a good reason. The GovernorGeneral nowadays is named by tlie King on the advice of his Canadian advisers. The term of the Earl of Bessborough, present incumbent, docs not expire until April, 1936. Meanwhile a general election will be held in this Dominion, and there is always the possibility that ins Majesty's present Canadian advisers may not be in onice when the time comes for consultations over Lord Bessborough's successor. Thus it is improbable that the subject so fur has had anv serious consideration.

Such public reaction to the r.omfon report as became evident was lavorahle, however. Unquestionably the Duke of Kent and the Princess Marina, would receive a most enthusiastic welcome, il they took up their residence at historic Rkfeau Hall in Ottawa.

Canada's list of governors-general includes already one member of the Royal bouse. The Duke of Connaught was here from 1911 to 1916, and his regime was one of the most popular and successful in, the history of this office.
