BRITISH INDUSTRY
MARKED IMPROVEMENT OLD CUSTOMS JETTISONED LEADING WORLD RECOVERY The marked improvement in industrial conditions in Great Britain timing the past three years was discussed in Auckland by Mr ('. .1. B. Norwood, managing director of Dominion Motors, Limited, and a former Mayor of Wellington, who has returned after an extended trip abroad. Mr Norwood wtis last in England three years ago when the country went, off the gotd standard, and he said it was amazing now to see the evidence all round of advancement and increased confidence. "Great'Britain is the one isolated instance among the principal nations of the world where Conservatives, Liberals and Socialists have surrendered party policies to the common cause of national recovery.". Mr Norwood said. "The Socialists have been not the least, in making their contribution towards this end." There was evidence in many directions, Mr Norwood continued, of a desire to break away from old customs and British industrialists were giving a lead to the world in many important directions. There were no outward signs of want. Considerable progress was being made towards the elimination of slum areas and in the many large housing programmes a feature'was the use of permanent materials, enabling long-term sales to be made at low weekly payments. This was something which might well receive consideration in New Zealand.
In the sphere of transport, £20,(100,000 was to 'be expended in bringing the railways up to date by means of electrification. Britain was also committed to an air service of seven days between London and Australia, and il was intended to continue this service to .Ww Zealand as soon' as possible. The Air Ministry recognised the importance of aviation from a national point of view and its plans, carried out in conjunction with British private enterprise, would probably result in the carriage of all first-class mail matter throughout, the Empire by air. The cost, would be amazingly low in comparison with the present charges for air mail services.
