Film Based on the War
"THE First World War." a film version of Laurence Stalling's history off the Great War in photographs, privately shown to an invited audience *it New York Inst month, reveals itself as a highly successful attempt to transfer to the screen not only outstanding happenings of the world war, but also the inexorable march of events which precipitated that conflict.
'Starting with a "flash" of Bismarck addressing the German people, the film features glimpses of the chief rulers of the world in their family circles, as well as attending State ceremonies. These glimpses include such intimate pictures as one of the Prince of Wales as a child gravely drilling his brothers and sister, the Princess Royal, with toy guns.
Slightly differing versions of the film have" been prepared for exhibition in various countries, each version being submitted to the authority of the country in question for revision—including King George, Ilerr Hitler and Signor Mussolini.
MR iSol Lesser, the film producer, who who had returned to Hollywood from' a business trip to London, said British pictures are a .serious menace to Hollywood's foreign trade. English films cut United States picture distribution by 25 cent. English producers were making a forceful bid for international markets.
