FIJI PROGRAMME

WELCOME TO DUKE INTERESTING CEREMONIES SUVA, Dec.. 17. In the four days that the Duke o! Gloucester will spend in Fiji he should see a great deal of native life and customs. In the tentative programme that has been drawn up considerable prominence has been given to native, ceremonies, which no doubt the Royal visitor will find very interesting. 11.M.A.5. Australia will arrive at Suva on February 1 and will sail on February 5. Following the official welcome at the wharf, the Duke will proceed to the Town Hall for the Mayoral reception. Later in the afternoon native and Indian ceremonies of welcome will be given at Albert Park, The chiefly yangona ceremony will be performed, during which the yangona (or kava) will he offered to the Royal visitor, and also tho presentation of a tambua, or whale’s tooth, which is regarded as a signal honor. Prominent Fijian chiefs will then be presented and mats and other Fijian gifts will be presented to the Duke. Prominent Indian residents will also be presented and an address of welcome read. Following the official dinner at Government House a Fijian entertainment and other Island dances will be given on the lawn at Government House.

On February 2 the Royal party will proceed to the Fijian capital of Bau and the Duke will be taken to Knba Reef to try the fishing. The afternoon will be occupied with native presentations and mekes. A Government ball and reception will be held in the evening, when 600 guests will be present. On Sunday, February 3, the Duke will leave for the island of Benga, the home of tho firewalkers, who will perform their remarkable ceremony for the Royal visitor. A fish drive will also be carried out on the reef. Monday morning has been left fairly free, but" in the afternoon a Mayoral garden party will be held at the Grand Pacific Motel. In the evening tliore will be a dance at the Town Hall for the sailors of the Australia and a private dance.at Government Hon,sc.
