MOUNTAINS fN SOUTH “FINEST EVER SEEN” Q ENERAL GODLBY’S PRAISE Having secured a wonderful view after 'von get over, till divide of the Holly ford Valley and Mount Christina, and having seen the Himalayas, the Andes, the Rockies and also the wonderful mountain scenery in South Spain and the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa'as well aft the fiords in Norway, I will say that this view, is is tine, if not finer than any other 1 have seen."Thus General Sir Alexander Godley paid a sincere and striking tribute to the beauties of the Eglinton Valley, Southland, which he visited last Saturday in company with Lady Godley and Captain John Brooks. He also told a Southland Times reporter that he thought Lake Manapouri wonderful md perhaps in a way even more beau-. * iful than Lake To Annu. Both he and Lady Godley enjoyed the scenery vorv much. "When there is a big, up-to-date hotel at To Anau and the roads are "ompleted, and if the attractions are well advertised, T think that a lot of visitors ought to eome out from England to see the lovely scenery." Sir Alexander added. General Godley was much struuek with the horses he saw in Southland saying he was glad to see that the '•reeding of good horses and of Hereon! cattle was still being carried oat. .He-further .stated that he had not iced a great deal of development in settlements since he was there 20 years ago. I’afticn'lnr mention was made by Sir Alexander of the splendid welcomes ■•.ccordod him by ex-servicemen both in Invercargill and in Gore. He said he vas very much impressed by the way ex-service associations were still flourishing, showing what a wonderful spirit of Anznc still survived.
