PEACE SHIELD BOWLS
FINALISTS SORTED
NEWTON AND McKENZJE
In the semi-final round of the Peace Shield bowling tournament, played on the Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s green this afternoon under tl.o supervision of ollicials of the Gisborne and East Coast Bowling Centre, the rinks skipped by J. E. Newton (Kahutia) and S. McKenzie (Poverty Bay) respectively won their matches, and qualified to play oil in the final match, which was scheduled lor this afternoon.
Tho Kahutia rink skipped by Newton was meeting, in the semi-final round, a Tokomaru, Bay four skipped by F. Thompson, and at an early stage Newton established a sound lead. Before the tenth head was disposed of, it became evident that only a solid recovery on the part of the Tokomaru Bay rink could .shake Newton’s position, and when Kahutia led 23-9 at the nineteenth head, the end was inevitable. Tho other semi-third followed a similar course. S. McKenzie’s Poverty Bay rink, which' was unbeaten in sectional play and had a byo in the first round of post-sectional games, made an excellent start against J. W. H. Holmes’ rink from the Gisborne club, and though the latter responded well, in spurts, McKenzie gradually drew ahead. At the seventeenth head tho Poverty Bay rink led 17-9, and while the chance of a pull-up by Holmes was not out of the question, the steadiness of the leaders seemed to indicate that tho game was, to- all intents and purposes, over. The scores at the close of these matches were:—
J. Buzza, J. Graham, A. Slight, S. McKenzie (s) 19 v. F. H. Galvin, R. Johnson, G. Crowley, J. W. H. Holmes (s) 14. 1. Robertson, B. L. Power, A. Sawyer, J. E. Newton (s) 23 v. H. Short, ,7. Law, A. L. Walker, F. Thompson (s) 9.
