SUPERB HORSEMANSHIP

DUKE RIDES AT MARTON

MOUNT COMES FOURTH

(For Press Association.) MARTON, last night

Exhibiting superb horsemanship, the Duke of Gloucester rode at the Marton races to-day, filling fourth position in the Ladies’ Bracelet, of one mile 137yds on the topweight, Blackman, owned by Mr, C. L. Bull, which was coupled with Red Flush. In the opinion of expert turf observers, the Duke had an almost impossible task to ride to victory with 12sl 21b, which gave a concession of 2st to the next horse. He did remarkably well to lead the field most of the way and have his number hoisted. Tho weather was brilliantly fine. The Prince drew No. 4 at the barrier and all got off to a perfect start. There was a roar from the crowd when, before a furlong had been covered the Duke had Blaukman in front and held the lead right into the straight. On the rails at the distance, when Blackman was in a winning position, a challenge came from The Ark, Conference and Royal Papa. The Duke’s mount appeared to falter, slightly lame, and ihe chance of capping a brilliant effort disappeared. The challengers fought it out in the order given, while the Duke was content with fourth place with Blackman under the tightest rein.

Tho Duko was accorded a membrable reception on returning- to weigh in, and the cheering was renewed when the time, 1.51 4-5, was announced. The Duke remained a spectator until the seventh race. lie presented the trophies.
