BATTLE IN CHURCH
WORSHIPPERS KILLED
“RED SHIRTS” RAID
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) NEW YORK, Dec. 30.
The New York Times Mexico City correspondent says that five Catholic worshippers were killed in a clash with a heavily-armed band of “Red Shirts,” a Fascist-like group of Government supporters, organised to press for an anti-church policy. About 45 “Red Shirts” paraded in a church where several thousand Catholics were holding a noon mass. They taunted the worshippers, denounced the church,-and cried “Death to priests.” Enraged Catholics attacked the “Red Shirts,” who immediately started firing, killing five and injuring about thirty. One “Red Shirt” was captured and beaten to death by the Catholics. Despite the fact that they were armed the “Red Shirts” were forced to retreat to a municipal building where they were besieged until the police cleared the neighborhood and took them into custody.
