SCENE IN PARLIAMENT
INCIDENTS REVIEWED
!, DEATH OF A BLACK
SYDNEY, Dec. 22.
There was uproar in the Legislative Assembly to-day when a member of the Opposition called out to Mr. Reid, U.A.P. member for Manly, “Why did you run away when the blackfellovv was killed?’’ Mr. Reid shouted in reply, “You are a. dirty liar.’’ Later, in addressing the Speaker, Mr Reid said that the Leader of the Opposition had charged him with being a murderer.
Given the .opportunity to make a personal explanation, Mr. Reid said that many years ago at Penrith he and another man had gone to a police sergeant’s assistance when a colored man had stabbed the sergeant in the chest. As the colored man pressed the knife against the officer’s chest, he (Mr. Reid) had thrown a stone, which had struck the colored man on the head. The man had turned and rushed at him, but the man who was accompanying him had grappled with the assailant. Eventually the c.olored man, who had been shot in the stomach by the policeman, the man who had accompanied Raid, and the police sergeant himself had all died of the wounds. At the inquest the coroner bad commended him for assisting the police, finding that the colored man had died of a wound inflicted by the police officer.
