TEXTILE DISPUTE

LANCASHIRE WEARY

AUSTRALIA CRITICISED

LONDON, Dec. 18

“This matter has been dragging on too' long, and we hope the committee will not mince its words,” says the .Manchester Dispatch; commenting on to-day’s meeting of textile traders for the further consideration of the Austarlian cotton duties.

“Lancashire is weary of Canberra’s ambiguous offers, which are suspect as evasions to safeguard the Christmas trade in Australian foodstuffs.

“Whitehall’s apparent apathy cannot be overlooked, but we hope that Whitehall is not allowing to pass unheeded Germany’s proposed barter agreements with the Dominions, particularly with Australia. “The spirit of Ottawa grows fainter and fainter overseas. Business men are asking how Australia balances her offers to Germany with her oftrepeated assertions that duties must be imposed against English manufactured goods in the interests of Australia’s own industries. “If Australia is so anxious to experiment, does she approach Berlin because she believes that the Lancashire, but not the German, market is safe?”
