A native tree, which will in time replace the existing lliree pinus insignia trees on the summit of One Tree Hill, Auckland, is in be planted by the Cornwall Park trustees. Manngakiekie obtained its European name from a totara tree planted on the summit about 200 years ago by Maoris to celebrate the birth of the son of a chieftain of the Ngatipoua tribe, members of which wen* guests of the Ngaiwi tribe, the inhabitants of Maungakiclde, during the journey from the north to Poverty Bay. The totara was later destroyed, and* it was replaced by three pine trees planted by Sir John Logan Campbell.
