OBITUARY
MR. JOHN STRAUCHON
FORMER SURVEYORGENERAL
The death lias occurred of Mr. .Tohn Strauchon, former Under-,Secretary of Lands. He was 8G years of age. A native of Berwickshire, Mr. Strauchon came to New Zealand as a boy of 14 and entered the provincial survey service of Otago, later transferring to the Survey Department of the .General Government. For some time lie was in charge of roads and bridges in Westland. Then ho was prompted to the position of commissioner of Crown lands, in which capacity he had charge in succession of the Taranaki, Wellington and Auckland districts. He was appointed Surveyor-General an 1909, Under-Secretary of the Lands Department in .19.10, and Under-Secretary for Immigration in 39.12, finally retiring from the service in 3.9.14, with the distinction of 1.5.0.
During the war Mr. Strauchon was a member of the recruiting committee, and subsequently was a member of the War Belief Society. Ho was a member of the Native Grievances Commission of 1920, and the North Island representation commission. He was chairman of the Mount Egmont Reserves Board and the National Park Board. In 1919-20 lie. was president of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors.
A Hawke’s Bay correspondent records llio death of 'Mrs Caroline Searle, proprietress of the Railway Hotel, Otanc, and widow of iho late Major Searle. Deceased was born at 'Caver.sham, Dunedin, and spent the greater part of her life there. The death of Mrs Florence Roberts, widow of Mr Albert Roberts, occurred at Ashburton after a comparatively short illness. A member of a wellknown -South of England family, Mrs Roberts arrived in Ashburton GO years ago with her young husband upon his appointment as manager of the Bank of New 'Zealand. One of the oldest residents of South Invercargill, Mr George Richard Hilton, BG, has passed away. A Wellington message reports the demise of Mrs. Maria Maude Cbckayno, widow of the late Dr. Leonard Cockayne, CUM.CL, the distinguished Now Zealand botanist.
Bowlers throughbut the Dominion will regret to learn of the death in Christchurch of Xfr. Fleming Laumison. formerly a member of the Wellington'and Hataitai clubs, Wellington.
