ANCIENT TOY

MADE FOR BOY PHARAOS

NEW YORK Nov. 5. A mechanical toy, designed 4000 years ago for the amusement of a boy Pharaoh, has been discovered by the Egyptian expedition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

It consists of four carved dolls, modelled after tho form of Central African pygmies. The mechanism which operates it is simple. The figures were Wound up with threads and allowed to revolve rapidly on spools which were imbedded in holes made in the ivory base. Egyptologists who unearthed it from a centuries-old cemetery in Lisht, Egypt, claim that it is remarkable for two reasons. First, it ‘ demonstrates the mechanical ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians, ana secondly, it represents a hitherto unknown departure m Egyptian art.
