Outside news is eclipsed at present by the spectacular army manoeuvres nw are proceeding in. the silk distriijWMnins and mountains to the northwest;? of Tokio, with the Emperor mounted on his favorite charger Shirayki (snow-white) participating in the troops’ arduous day and night activities.
The.ex-War Minister, General Araki, is again in the limelight, commanding the Western Army against the Eastern Army. Both are using the most modern equipment, including planes, which the arsenals have been busily turning out. in recent years. Multitudes are watching from the hills. Police and plain-clothes officers have recently been meticulously examining foreign passengers in trains in the region of the manoeuvres, even old ladies.
