LADY BLEDISLOE’S SPEECH REQUEST MADE TOO LATE (Per Piers Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last uigbt. The broadcasting authorities last week refused u request to broadcast a speech by Lady Bledisloe to a gat holing of women’s organisations on Thursday.
Lady Blcuisloe addressed a meeting of women’s organisations of, Christchurch, arranged by the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, and permission was obtained from Her Excellency to have the address broadcast. The proposition was made to the authorities of 5\A Christchurch, but they declined to put the speech on the air. Mr. J. MacKcnzie, station director of BYA, said this evening that there was an interesting story behind the incident. One lady, who was concerned with the arrangements told the women’s organisation that the station would' be "glad to arrange for the broadcast. Nothing was said to the station, however, but the women went on with their part* of the arrangements. The day before Lady Bledisloc was asked to speak a request was received by telephone for a broadcast to be made. Mr. MacKcnzie said it was then too late to make any arrangements, because the hands of the station were full.
The incident created a good deal of trouble, said Mr. MacKcnzie, because many women’s organisations in other parts of the country were advised' by telegraph to listen for the broadcast. Ho hoped that Lady Bledisloe on her next visit to Christchurch would consent to a broadcast message to the women of New Zealand.
