ANNUAL ROSE SHOW
CITY HALL DISPLAY (1 ORE EO FS SUMMER, BLOOMS -RECORD JUNIOR, ENTRIES The annual rose show of the Poverty Ray Horticultural Society, opened tins afternoon at the City Hall, marked a fin Liter stage in, the most successful year experienced since the society was resuscitated several seasons ago. The display of summer blooms was gorgeous, and in fact must have rivalled Die best ever belli iu Gisborne, the general standard of exhibits being unusually high, and the premier awards going to fine specimens of Die respective varieties. A special feature of the show was the interest taken in the junior classes, the entries in this division Tieiugi numerous, and one class staging the unusual number IS entries. The society has worked hard to promote interest in liorticultine in this district, and is enjoying an unexpectedly early and refreshing success ■n the junior department particularly. In the open division, the entries also were large, and the judges were given plenty to do before they their awards. Nearly 500 entries were dealt with altogether, in the hour or two prior to the official opening of the show for the general public. Judges were Messrs. E. C. Calcott, roses, R. G. Crawford, decorative, and 8. Tate, decorative; while Hie stewards were Miss M. Bull, and Messrs. H. G. Wcllbourne, G. T. Maunder, and R. G. A. Whiting, all enthusiastic members of the society who by their services assisted to secure success for Die show. Messrs. C. O. Hansen, president of the society, and R. A. Berge, lion, secretary, also deserved commendation for the work they put ino the preparations; and they must have felt well pleased with the outcome of their efforts.
The judging of the decorative classes was completed in short order by Mr. Tate, who mentioned that the section was rpiite the best he had ever seen at a Gisborne show, and especially deserving of praise in the junior classes. There will he an evening session of the show, tlie hall opening at 7 o’clock and these who were unable to see the display this afternoon would be well advised not to miss the opportunity presented by the night session.
