LAMB COMPETITION

FINE GISBORNE DISPLAY BETTER THAN LAST YEAR LOCAL AWARDS MADE Gisborne killings in the Meat Board’s export fat lamb competition were made at the Krniti freezing works this morning, when the 15 pens to-re-present the district in London judging for the North Island trophy were selected.

The judge, Mr. .T, Barr, Hastings, expressed himself as being very pleased with the quality before him, and said it was a big improvement on last year’s competition, and would reflect great credit on the district when displayed at Smithfield. He also said that the lambs received were, much better than those in the Hawke’s Bay section of the competition. The Hawke's Bay lambs wore killed on Thursday, and only lit pens came forward. Mr. Barr also complimented the butchers upon the attractive manner in which the lambs were dressed.

Mr. Barr commented on the great interest, taken in the competition in Gisborne. He was pleased to see a representative gathering present, whereas in Hawke's Bay only on.* buyer and' one farmer troubled to attend Ihe judging. There was very little difference between the first four pens selected by the judges to fill the local judging awards, and they gave him a great deal of trouble to separate. The pen placed third was equally as good as the second on main points, but lost the second award by faulty docking. The need for more careful handling was also expressed by Mr. Barr. A number of lambs came into the freezing works badly bruised, he said, and in one particular consignment by lorry nearly all were bruised. The local judging resulted as follows: — Pen No, 9, F.
