NUHAKA FLOWER SHOW

A GREAT SUCCESS HIGH CLASS EXHIBITS (Herald Correspondent.) The Nuhaka Flower Show, under the auspices of the Anglican. Church, was held in the L.D.S. Hall on Thursday, and was a great success, there being a very large attendance. Extra new classes had been added and in most cases the .140 classes were well competed for, the total number of entries being a little in excess of last. year. Archdeacon Butterfield, Wairoa, who declared the show open, thanked the ladies who had come so far to adjudicate, their task being no light one. He also thanked the exhibitors for their share in making the show the well merited success.

The following were the. judges:— Flowers and vegetables, Mrs. Thodey and Miss Picken, Patutahi; cooking, Mrs. Scragg, Patutahi; fancy work and children’s section, Mrs. Ct; V.' Smith, Patutahi. ' •

The judges said the cooking on the whole was well up. to standard, the winning exhibits in the plain and fancy sponge being of excellent quality. Some very good bread was displayed, showing good color and texture. A word of advice to exhibitors in the preserves and pickles was that they should not -wax the tops, as it was somewhat difficult to judge under those conditions. The flowers and vegetables were quite up to the standard of any show ia New Zealand. The roses and cut. flowers were'of excellent quality. The decorative class was splendid. The winning exhibits in the blue and white class were the best the judge had ever seen. Special mention was made of the children’s section, the buttonhole and sprays being better exhibits than tlioso of the adults, showing correct style although they were not finished so well. The fancy work and Maori work was of outstanding quality, and worthy of many bigger shows. A most unique feature of the show was the wonderful work done in the model class by the Maori, children, mostly tiny tots, which warranted much merited praise and was a credit to both children'and teachers.

Much credit is due to the president, Mr. 11. R. Hickling, the secretaries, Messrs. R. Steed and K. Whaanga, and committee for the excellent manner in which the show was staged. This year’s show was one of the best hold in Nuhaka.

A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. ,T. Ryan, Miss Stood and Miss A. Woodley. THE AWARDS
