“Yolverton,” tho beautifully .situated home of Air and Airs T. Corson ia Riverside road, was the scene of a very enjoyable .garden party on Thursday afternoon given by the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle. The hostess, who is a member of the circle, put her grounds at the disposal of members for-one of their series of garden parties held during the summer months..

Glorious weather/ with bright sunshine, favored the gathering, and there (was a very large attendance, the function proving most successful. The garden, in its-pretty setting near the river,■ was looking its best, the choice collection of roses which is its main feature being in bloom. . With a picturesque plantation of native trees and' cabbage-tree palms for .a background, the rose garden, containing only cultivated roses, with its lovely fragrant blooms and dainty buds, looked very pretty and was greatly ad mired. ' The ' guests were most interested in the roses, and were dolighted to find a number of new specimens.’ • 1

A very pleasant gathering was held at tho residence of the Rev. J. H. and Airs. Boyd, Mangapapa, by the teachers pf Knox Sunday school. The purpose of the gathering was to receive gifts either in the form of presents or in cash for tile Sunday school Christmas tree, to bo held next month. There was a large attendance. A large array of presents, as well as iss in cash, was received. Mr. Boyd expressed. his satisfaction, on behalf of tho teachers, , at the splendid response.-

On Tuesday morning Airs W. A. Smith entertained the executive committee iif the Women’s Club at a most enjoyable informal -party at her home in Derby street 'in honor of Airs Lovell-Smith, secretary of the 'Hastings Women’s Club, who was spending a few day's in Gisborne. The drawing-room was fragrant with the scent of the beautiful roses with which the room was prettily decorated. A delicious morning tea was served, and conversation was carried on, the topics being varied, though club matters provided subjects of mutual interest. : Airs Lovoll-'Smith has left on a fortnight’s visit to the country, but it is hoped a club' function will bo arranged for her on her return to Gisborne.

G-arden Party at-‘ vYelvertcn : ’ Yesterday afternoon in glorious weather the pretty garden of “Yelvcrton,’ the home of Mr. and Airs. T. Corson, Riverside road, was again the scene of a very delightful garden party, given on this occasion by Mrs. Corson in aid of the Gisborne Bowlers’ Croquet Club. The majority of the guests were members' of the elub, and for their entertainment original competitions were arranged, and entered into with keen interest.

“Crazy Croquet” was won by Mrs. E. Faithful in the A division, and by -Mrs. H. Gilmer in the B division. "Heifer Skelter,” played in was won in the A division by Aleidanies W. A. Jennings and ,L. Nasmith, and in the B division by Mesdames 11. 11. DeCosta and E. A. Moncriefl', and "Hoops” was won by Mesdames W. A. Jennings and R. Fisken in the A and B grades respectively. Each winner was presented with a charming prize by the hostess. Exquisite roses bloomed in profusion in the garden and were greatly admired. A delicious tea was served at small tables on the lawn, which was also furnished wit’ll easy chairs, the guests enjoying refreshments in' great comfort and in most picturesque surroundings. Mrs. Corson received-her guests wearing a smart black silk ensemble, and a black hat. Her daughter from Christchurch, Mrs. Innes-Jones, wore a tailored frock of natural Shantung, and Airs. Garden Party at Waerenga-a-hika A delightful garden party was held yesterday afternoon at -St. Luke’s vicarage, Wacrenga-a-hika by the Rev. It. and Airs Hodgson, to enable the parishioners to welcome and meet His Lordship the Rt. Rev. 11. W. Williams,'; Bishop of Waiapu, and Mrs Williams,- who had just arrived- from Hawke’s Bay. Perfect, summer weather -prevailed throughout the day, and the large number nf guests had i very enjoyable time in i he pretly garden. Beautiful roses and irises were the most admired features of tho garden,' which was an ideal spot, for -smdi a gathering with its shady fi-eqs and spacious lawns, and beds of bright (lowers. Two novel* competitions proved' very popular entertainments. One. .a fruit contest, was won by Mrs Barrow, and iho other, putting, by Aliss Halbert, the winners being presented with suitable rewards. The guests were each requested to bring a gift for the Christmas tree, at the Wuorenga'-a-hika Church fete, tc be held on December G in the college grounds, and the numerous parcels so collected were opened by Airs Hodgson and Misses. A. .Gray and Halbert on the lawn, the guests watching the proceedings with interest as the many and varied attractive gifts were freed from their paper wrappings. Afternoon tea was daintily served under the trees on the lawn, and His Lordship and Airs Williams renewed acquaintance with the guests. Garden Party at “The Laurels” A very successful garden party was held by St. John’s Ladies’ Guild, Mangapapa, "on Thursday afternoon at “Tim Laurels,” the home of Air. and Mrs. C. H. Ferris, who had kindly offered their pretty garden for the function, the hostess being a guild member. The weather was ideal for ail entertainment out-of-doors, and the guests spent a delightful afternoon in the sunshine. The beautiful roses and pretty flowering shrubs and other summer blooms were very much admired, providing bright notes of color against the contrasting green of the lawns and surrounding shady trees. The Rev. H. Daniel introduced the Mayor, Mr. J. Jackson, who formally declared the fete open, and the stalls ready for business, at-tiie Same time complimenting • the organisers on their splendid display of goods and tjie well filled, attractive stalls, Mrs. J. W. Hudson, president of the guild, presented the Mayoress, Mrs. Jackson, with a charming floral bouquet. The Malls were prettily decorated with colored paper streamers, the stallholders being, as follow: Cakes, Mesdaines Hudson, Harrison and Hughes; produce, Mesdames Mead and Lentell;sweets, Mrs. Carter and Miss N. Glauville; tea rooms, Mesdames Oolebournu, Preston, Hargreaves and Harding; ice creams, Mrs. Hoe. Several novel competitions were held, these being Organised by members of the Girls* Club. At the concert in the evening a delightful programme was presented to a most appreciative audience, each, artist receiving hearty applause, aiid the items being very well received. Vocal solos were sung by Mrs. A. C. Coleman, Misses Lois Davys and Moore, Messrs. A. Ansell and S. Vincent, and Master W. Dunsmpre. A dialogue in costume was given by Misses Audrey Turnbull, Valda and Helen Haley, and L. McNee, and recitations were rendered by Miss Lois Davys and Mr. Stan Vincent. An item by the children’s choir was in Mrs. Coleman’s charge, and a character sketch that followed was by Miss. Pamela Pollock". Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Renner gave a vocal duet, and Misses Joy Seaiey, Joan and Lois ■' Coleman, aud Juan Laton a vocal quartet. The pianoforte accompaniments were played by Mesdames H. Daniel and Garland and Miss Glanville. Miss Z. Carter was successful-in a cake weight estimating contest, while Airs.
