LAWN TENNIS

ENGLISH TEAM

AUCKLAND EXHIBITION

HIGH STANDARD OK RLAY (Per Press A-'-.-odatioii.) •\UCKLAND, last night. Members of the English lawn tennis team made a farewell appearance in Auckland to-day, when they played in exhibition games. Rain fell overnight and early tbh- morning, and shortly .after the first match commenced drizzling rain set in, and continued until (lie last half-hour. Under the conditions, the standard of tennis was exceptionally high and a crowd almost as large as on Saturday spent an enjoyable afternoon watching the various games. Finding llio slower conditions more to his liking than did Perry, whose .sped was greatly diminished on the slippery surface, Hughes created a mild surprise by defeating (ho champion in I Wo straight, sets.

France and Sturt improved upon their performance on Saturday by taking the first set of the men’s doubles from Perry and Hughes, who, however, were definitely on ‘lop throughout the deciding sel. The ladies’ doubles were interesting from the fact Dial Misses Lyle and Dearman, who defeated Misses Round and Maefarlano recently, defeated 'the American ladies in the Wightman Gup contest, and so ’their play was followed- very closely, ' All fo-itr played well, but lire winning pair, who adopted ’the formation of one ;at, the net, and the other at the baseline, displayed the belter combination. Miss Dearman’s powerful work at close range was an important factor. The only singles match was that between Misses Round and Lyle, in which the, champion won in straight sets. Miss Lyle offered stout resistance, but could not cope with the persistent and varied attack of her brilliant opponent. Following were the results of the matches: — G. P. Hughes boat F. J. Perry, fi —2, B —(3. Hughes and Perry beat J). G. France and N. (I. 'Sturt, 5—7, ti —4. (i—-J. 'Miss D. Round beat Miss X. M. Lyle. (5—3, li—!. Misses Lyle and E. M. Dearman heal Misses Round and M. Maefarlano, B—fi, 7—5.
