MR. ’ LOUIS BLUNDELL

(Per Press Association.) ' WEI/LING'OON, this day. . The death has occurred of Mr. Louis ■Proctor Blundell, senior proprietor ni the. Evening Post, m his eighty-fifth yenr.

The late Mv. Louis Proctor Blundell, chairman of directors of Messrs. Blundell Brothers, Limited, Wellington, had a long career in New Zealand journalism. fie was born in Dublin nearly 85 years ;i -ro. He was educated in Melbourne and at a private school in Dunedin. In 1864 he moved to Havelock, then an important goldmiirmg centre, and with Ins'father as a partner founded the Havelock Mail. The prospects proved unsatisfactory, however, and the. paper ceased publication shortly niter-wards. The plant being shipped to- Wanganui, where it was unable to land, as the. Maori War was raging in the vicinity at the time, ami it was taken to Wellington. In this manner, the Evening J ost, Wellington’s first- daily paper, was founded bv the. late Mr. Blundell's father and Mr. David Curie. The paper was first published on February 8. 1865. Citricselling out his interests a few months later, the paper was carried on by Mr. Blundell sen., and his three sons. After the death of the father, the business was formed into a private company, of which the late Mr. L. P. Blundell became manager and later chairman of directors. He was elected a. life member of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association in 1930 and had been a director of the United Press Association since 1894, including several times its chairman. The honor of M.B.E. was conferred upon him in 1919. He was married to Miss Annie Coker in Christchurch in 1879, and is survived by two sons and ofiA daughter.
