COOK MATERNITY HOME

HANDSOME NEW BUILDING MODERN CONSTRUCTION A handsome, building, to lie constructed on the most modern principles, lias been designed by Mr. F. H. Forgo for the Cook Maternity Home, and tenders arc now being called for the erection of the building. The home will be built on pleasing lines, and will, conform as nearly as possible in appearance to the main Cook Hospital buildings. It will be erected on an excellent site adjoining the nurses’ tennis court, and with a line view overlooking Gisborne and the bay. The building will have an overall length of 116 ft., and a width at the widest part of 00ft. It will comprise three three-bed wards, one twobed ward, one one-bed ward, a special ward, day-room, nursery and babies’ verandah, doctor’s room, sisters’ room, and two sterilising rooms, with the addition of bathrooms and other necessary departments. Washbasins with hot and cold water will be provided in each ward, and the building will no heated throughout by means • of a system of hot-water radiators.

The home will be one storey high, and has been designed on modern principles to resist earthquake. One main corridor will run right through the middle of the building, and the main entrance will be in front of the building, opening on to this corridor midway along. As far as possible the interior of the building will be free from projections. In front there will be a verandah . r >4ft. long and 10ft. wide.

Tiled facings will be provided in order to conform as much ns possible with the other buildings. Owing to earthquake conditions and the additional weight, however, tiles will be eliminated from the roof construction, and galvanised iron will be substituted.

The removal of the present nurses’ cottage and ante natal clinic from St. Helen’s Home, and the re-erection of these buildings on the new site forms part, of the contract. These two buildings will be re-erected on sites adjoining the new home, one to the north and the other to the east of it. Tenders, closing on November 10, at noon, have been called in Gisborne, Auckland, Wellington, and Napier.
