THE MONTHLY MEETING h The Cook Cuun'ty Council met today. Present: Crs. Charles Matthews, chairman,. W. O. Sherratt, J. C. N. Thomas, J. E. Benson, M. T. B. Hall, E. 11. Baker, F. A. Shanks, F. S. Bowen, J, Toimbleson, and S. T. Gray. 'Mr Robert,, Bruco wrote on belmlf of himself and Messrs. Mc'Crae and Lister, asking permission to put a gate on their road in order"to nso cattle to crush tiiQ .tall,fescue. —No objection was raised in the meantime. 'Cr. Sherratt had his vote recorded against the resolution, saying that the council had deeided against a. similar previous application. ‘ * The Southland County Council wrote seeking support for its proposal that the limit of £2500 paid to counties collecting £IO,OOO annually in general rates should be abolished, and that all counties should receive the full subsidy of 5s in the £ on all general rates collected.—lt was deeided to refer the matter to the members of Parliament for this district. The county ranger, Mr E. A. Cameron, reported having seized 168 head of stock for impounding during the month ended October .13.
The engineer, reporting on Kent’s drain, Makaraka, stated that the -existing; drain had received attention with relief labor, in order to provide a proper outlet for the water from the various roads it crossed, and this had been satisfactorily carried out. Should the ditch not be deep enough to drain some of the adjoining properties efficiently, it was a matter for the owners concerned to arrange, by arbitration if necessary.—The report was adopted. The chairman reported as .follows: — "As directed bv the council, with the county clerk and county engineer, I have considered, the question of staff holidays and now recommend as follows: Officers of the staff generally shall be granted ■ two weeks’ leave each year at a date ns near to the day of their joining the staff as can be made convenient to both sides.
