L, Muir was .voted to the i chair, in the absence of the president and vice-president. Mr. L. T. Burnard, vice-president, attended later. . A. considerable amount of correspond-, enee on the subject of the relations of. the Gisborne chamber with the New Zealand Associated Chambers was dealt with in committee. The condition of the bridge at Waihuka, on the main north highway, was referred to by Mr. Corson, who pointed out that the structure was badly in need of improvement, there being very little Clearance for the larger types of lorries, and a constant risk of damage. Mr. Corson moved that the Wuikohu County Council be asked to take up the matter with the Highways Board. The secretary mentioned that the Waikdhu council had already taken steps in the matter. Mr. DeCosta seconded the motion, and in the course of a -general discussion the chairman remarked that the district appeared to have been “left rather badly” in the matter of highways construction. Travelling in other districts, one could not help being impressed with the differential treatment given to Poverty Bay and the East Coast., , Other speakers mentioned difficulties found in-negotiating various bridges on the main north highway, but it was agreed that the Waihuka bridge was by far the worst on. the route. Mr. Corson’s motion received general support, and instructions to the secretary were given accordingly. Mr. Ohrisp brought up the matter of the proposal made bv the Napier Cham- j ber of Commerce that the Government should construct a direct, road between Waikaremoana , and Whakatane. lie; pointed out that if this proposal was carried through, it might lead to the Last Coast main highway, on. which' the development of tourist traffic largely depended, being neglected by the Government. Tho point was discussed briefly, and it was agreed tiiat the chamber could take no action. The secretary inquired what .was the opinion of members on tho result of tho differential rates of charges for telegraphic service. The meeting . agreed unanimously that the various firms were using the telegraph service lgss than before, but it. was considered that any action in the 'matter would he premature, the promise of the Postmaster* General of a review of the charges after a reasonable period of trial being recalled.
