THEFT OF A BRIDGE

ITALIANS PUZZLED ROME, August 26. A theft as amazing in scale as it is perplexing in motive is reported from the town of I'reviso. a few miles north of Venice. Il would appear that a bridge i f American larchwood, some 80ft. long, which only last night- had spanned the River Sile at a place, called Canizzano, had by this morning disappeared so completely that even the three piers which formerly supported it are now no longer visible above the water’s surface. The Commune of Treviso, while it has not yet succeeded in finding the thieves, should nevertheless derive some consolation from reflecting upon the rickety condition of its former property, which (oi icasons of public safety had for a long time been closed to all traffic.
