RACING FIXTURES

Oct. 12, 13.—Alasterton R.G. Oct. 13.—South Canterbury J.C. Oct. 13, 15.—Auckland R.C. Oct. 20, 22—Wellington R.C. Oct. 22. —Waipawa R.C. Oct. 22. —Waverley R.C. Oct. 25, 27—Poverty Bay T.C. Oct. 27.—Rangitikei R.C. Nov. 3, s.—Avondale .T,C. Nov. 3,5, 7, 10. —Canterbury .T.C,

The Winter Cup winner. Princes.-'. Doreen, lias had three races since she scored in the big mile at Riecarton. and has failed in every one of them. She did not run on iri the anile and u-qtiarler at Fn.vton, but ran a better race over the distance at Otaki, only to run very badly there on the second day. Her form is puzzling, but her form always has been subject to such u'ps and downs. * * * * Thespis is not engaged on the first day of the Auckland spring meeting, but lias been entered for the Manukau Hurdle Race and the Onehunga Steeplechase on the second day of that fixture. So far Thespis has not yet contested a crosscountry event, but he has had some schooling over the big fences at Ellerslie, and on. each occasion lias got through his task in a creditable manner. If started in the steeplechase, in preference to the hurdles, the prospects of Thespis will have to he considered. * * « Latest reports from Sydney show that ‘Silver Ring was fancied for the Epsom Handicap after all. Following upon his good race at Hawkesbury, there was a steady and insistent demand for him in the big mile race, so that his price, while still a good one ar. the start, had considerably shortened from what it stood at earlier. Silver Ring was also hacked , extensively in doubles with Oro and Waihare (winner of the Metropolitan). ■* * i|i if 'Mr M. IT. Tims, of To Awamutu, has had the misfortune to lose his 10-year-old brood mare Rikoriko, by Day! Comet from Kilheggan, thus a half-, sister to Karapori. Rikoriko was sent to Wanganui to be mated with the! Son-in-Law horse Beau Pore, and while there was found dead in the paddock. Mr Tims has been most unlucky during the last six months, having already lost both General Lntour and Kilheggan, the parents of Karapoti. » if * :|i Allegretto, who .figures in the Trial Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday, is j reported to he showing promise in his j schooling tasks at To Rapa. So Ear j the Day Comet gelding has had no public experience as a hurdler, hut J he possesses plenty of speed arid is a j proved weight-carrier, two valuable j assets in a jumper. In conformation j Allegretto is an ideal type for hurdle racing, and with experience should do, well in the new department. * * # * I Silver Coat, winner of the two, juvenile events at Wingatui last week, is evidently a smart galloper, as lie appears to have won his two races convincingly. There is some obscurity; attached to Silver Coat’s breeding, his’ dam Silver Patch claiming a very short pedigree. In addition, she was 25 years old when she produced Silver Coat, tylio, unfortunately, is not nominated in any of the remaining classics this season, * * * * Among the horses nominated for the Waintii Handicap, on the first day of the Wellington meeting, is the eight-year-old. Semper Paratus, who is two years older than his brother, pricket Bat, also engaged iii the same race. Semper Paratus has been off the scene for' more than a year, and he has not started since lie competed, in the Grand National meeting last year, when he finished last in a field of 12 in the Trial Hurdles. He has been nominated for the hurdle race on

the second day at Trenthain. * $ * + A well-grown two year old coll by Night Raid from 'En Parole, has joined E. J. Ellis’ team at Wnslulyke. He j was Tired by 'his owner, Air 11. El-, worthy, and was reared and handled at (lie Elderslie ‘Stud. The youngster can boast of some sound and interest-, ing breeding, En Parole being a sister i to Bobrik off, one of the most brilliant gallopers of his time. En Parole’s earlier progeny included Right and Left, Phoenix Park, and Great Charter. * * <i ,> Wise Boy, the winner of the Australian Jockey Club's Breeders’ Plate, was sold for the modest sum of 80gns. as a yearling. He \vas bred by A. E. Thompson and Sons, Bylong station, Rylstone, New South Wales, and is a brown gelding liy Treelare from Wiseacre, by , Linn eve from Sanity, an imported mare by Santoy. Wise Boy is Treelare’s second winning representative iri this rare, lie having sired last year’s winner, Fashion Star. The runner-up tliis year, Remhrant, was another very cheap yearling, costing only 50gns.; hut the third colt, Lathnrnn, bred by Mr. Q. M. Currie, and a half-brother to Pomp, cost 800gns. * d # Nightly’s win in the Randwick Plate last Saturday was a nice consolation prize for his* bad luck in the Metropolitan Handicap, and it is also indicative that lie has reached form in spite of recurring lameness. A feature of Saturday’s win is that it was over two miles. Nightly has always shown stamina, and his prospects in the Melbourne Cup cannot he ignored; in fact, his defeat in the Metropolitan Handicap may eventually turn out a blessing in disguise, ns lie would, as a winner of the Sydney race, have earned a 101 b. penalty for the Cup. in which lie is handicapped at 9.0. That penalty would have raised him to equal top weight with Peter Pan, who was the favorite prior to the A.J.C. meeting. * Jjt # The following riding engagements are announced for the Auckland meeting: A. Tinker, Gay Sheik, Gay Blonde. lmiia’sto and Greek Gold; T.‘Green, Havering (Mitchrlson Gup); P. Atkins, Red Manfred, Pin Money and Arch Ruler; J. Forsyth, Night. Flight (second day); U, Wiggins, Solomon, Solarium, Kelly and Pay Wind; S. Tremain, Mnngaere, Mungat'ooii. British Columbia, Trevace mid .Jalldy Karo; L. J. Ellis. Jonathan. Spiral. Burnish, Pomp and Galilee; J. Fergus. Chroniadyne and Miss Dazzle; S. J. Caminick, Glenhatipo and KnrangnpKi: IT. Long, Chief Cook and Auhrotia; B. Horne, Versant and On Parade; K. Voitre. Liriihohui. B. Sullivan. Flower Bag; W. J. Broughton, Oarfcx: 11. Goldfinch, Kotou; D. J. Burgess, Bainba; E. Manson, Baroscope and Ruling King.

The Seigfried—Left two-year-old eoli iri work at Wanganui is reported lo be very attractive, and is the centre of a great deal of interest. The future o: this half-brother to Gaine Carrington and I’erer Jackson will lie watched with interest.

Spiral, which will he 1.. J. Ellis’ mount in the Milelielson Clip, is also in the New Zealand Cup, and no doubt the fulfilment of the latter engagement depends upon how lie runs at Auckland and Trent ham. If it is decided to run Spiral at Rierarton, Ellis will he required for him. Otherwise he will have the mount on Sweet Agnes, on which he won a double at 1 be Grand National meet ing.

Prolvxn’s success in the President’s Handicap, run over eight furlongs and a-lialf at the Taumarunni meeting, was. full of merit, and she came from the rear of the tifld and won going away. It was her first success since last summer, but the form was encouraging, as she accounted for several horses with recent winning form to llieir credit. If Prolyxo has gone on the right way since she raced at Paeroa some more money looks assured for her before the spring meetings are over. * * * * Judging by the starting price of the New Zealand two-year-old Golden Promise, which won a division of the Canonbury Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, he was not particularly well fancied. At the same time tie is bred to develop into a high-class colt. He was bred hv his owner. Mr. 0. F. Moore, being by Limoni) from Lady BeritinCk, by Absurd from Bonny Portland, by Bonifoi'in, from Helen Portland, an Aus-tralian-bred mare by Dorchester. lie is a half-brother to Belvoir and Topthorn. both of whom were winners when trained by F. D. Jones at Riecarton, while lie is a brother in blood to Golden Hair, whose dam. Lady Cavendish, is a sister to Lady Bentinck. This is a family from which Mr. Moore has bred many good performers, Reremonna, by Hallowmas from Bonny Portland, being one of its outstanding representatives. Golden Promise attracted a lot of attention when offered for sale at Trentham in January, and lie might have realised n big price hut for an opinion that MrMoore was not anxious to sell. He was a well-grown and good-looking eolt, and now that he lias demonstrated his galloping ability, it is hard lo say how far he may gin.
