ALMOST A TRAGEDY
GIRL SAVED FROM RIVER SCORE POINT INCIDENT Shortly after 11 a.m. to-day a girl between 15 and 17 years of age was rescued from the Waimata River _at Score Point, and was sent to hospital still insensible from the effects of her immersion. The identity of the girl was not known this morning, but police inquiries were set afoot immediately after her dispatch to hospital. The girl evidently had a most fortunate escape, for she was left by the tide on the projecting ledge of clay at Score Point, and was observed lying halfsubmerged at the water’s edge. The discovery was made by a tradesman who was driving along Clifford street, and who called the attention of men working in the Score Point gardens to the girl. She was immediately taken from the water, and a doctor was summoned, first aid being applied immediately to promote her breathing. The girl was dressed in day clothes, and wore a heavy red overcoat over a blue, dress. On her ieet were bedroom slippers. It is surmised that she entered the water somewhere higher up the river and was partially supported by air collected in her clothing, the current of the river carrying her downstream until she stranded on the clay-bank at Score Point. The appearance of her clothes supported this surmise, for they were sodden with mud and water, as though after a fairly lengthy immersion. When dispatched to hospital, the girl was still insensible, but .was breathing regularly.
