CORRESPONDENCE

KAITI BEACH

(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, —Please allow mo space in your valuable paper to- take exception to Or. -1. H. Hall’s remarks at the last meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. Can Or. Hall truthfully sav that Kaiti Beach is a beauty spot of Gisborne? To start with, one has to- pass tho freezing works to even see the beach, and on arrival there is greeted with the Borough Council septic tank and the refuse pipe from tfie freezing works, both flowing on to this “Beauty Spot.’ One afternoon while sitting on the Cook Monument, the. Council’s sanitary inspector came to me and asked it 1 knew what the horrible smell was. ft proved on investigation to be from tho septic tank. This is also one of the reasons why the memorial service for Captain C’o'ok was such a failure as people do not like this refreshing odour. I am certain that anyone with any pride in their town would be ashamed to take visitors there, but. I am equally sure it would not bo for the reason Cr. Hail has brought forward. With regard to the “tin shacks” on the beach the only two which give the appearance of a slum area are, owned by the Borough Council and are dignified by the name, of dressing sheds. In reference to picnickers on the beach, there is more than ample space, for all the people that ever go round picnicking and I can assure you they are not many, for in some instances when the freezing works, are working and a westerly wind is blowing it is impossible to go in bathing for a week on end owing to refuse from the works covering the, water and creating a very disagreeable smell. The health authorities have been round to see what can be done and still there k no improvement. Also bow many fn-ople when Haiti Beach is mentioned, say that they do not like that beach? "When the Council does away with- the septic tank and the freezing works outlet. Kaiti Beach will bid fair to become a beauty spot, but never before. —Yours, etc,, B. HANLEN.
