YOUTHS INJURED
KNOCKED DOWN BY OAR W AINU I ROAD ACCIDENT At .about 6.30 p.m. on Saturday two youths who are stated to have been, "double-banking” on a bicycle, were knocked down by a car in Wainui road, and were subsequently admitted to the Cook Hospital suffering from injuries which, however, are not regarded as serious. The cyclists were George Solomon, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon, Sponge Bay, and Desmond Hyde, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hyde, 4 Massey road. The, accident occurred ab the bend near the Tyndall road intersection on the main road, and the car involved in the accident was driven by Mr. R. Ford, of Ruatoria. Mr. Ford was returning to Wainui from Gisborne, and when ho reached the bend referred to he overtook a horse-drawn sledge driven by a Chinese, who was walking on the roadway beside the sledge. Mr. Ford pulled to the side to pass the sledge, and just then tlio cyclists appeared on the road. It is stated that the yoljiks were ’’double-banking” on a bicycler without a light, and against a stiff head wind. Mr. Ford swerved in an attempt to avoid them, hut his tar struck the. cyclists a glancing blow, and they were, knocked down. Both were unconscious when Mr. Ford went to their assistance, hut regained consciousness shortly afterwards. Thov were conveyed to the Cook Hospital in the St. John Ambulance Association’s motor ambulance, and it was reported this morning that their condition was satisfactory. They received minor head injuries.
