IMPORTANT ROAD WORKS

NO GOVERNMENT GRANTS

RAKAUROA TIMBER OUTLET

HEAVY TARNDALE

COUNTRY

The, failure of the Public Works Department to set aside money the Tarndalc and Rakauroa-Tahora is severely handicapping two vedtrnportant works in the Waikohu _ _ Application was made by the \\ aikohu County Council for £2400 for work in heavy country on the Tarndale road, which will give access to a very wide area of productive back country, and £3OOO was asked for the RakauroaTahora road, which will give a short outlet for timber being taken out of the, Tahora country. Work on the Tarndale road is proceeding in the easy country by men on relief works, to which the, Unemployment. Board is contributing. At present there appears to he no impediment to this woMc proceeding, but as a relief job it can only he taken a certain distance. • Explaining the position to a pressman to-day, the county engineer, Mr. A. G. Lucas, stated that the Public Works Department’s money was needed for • three miles of country in which some big enftings and fillings' were required, together with the removal of logs and stumping. If this work could proceed at the same time as the relief job on the easier section of the road, the two sections could be joined by the end of next year, giving a continuous road for 10 miles. This would give slock an outlet from the Te Rata,, Arowhana and Mangataue country. This was dependent at present on the old river road, and the state, of the river, which completely blocked all traffic after rain.

Nine miles of metalling were required on the Rakauroa-Tahora- road, and for this money from the Public Works Department totalling £3OOO was required. If this were completed, a valuable outlet, would be given a great deal of timber, which at present had to be taken on the very much longer route of 14 miles to Matawai.

Much disappointment was expressed when grants for the works mentioned did not appear on the estimates, and an endeavor is being made to secure their inclusion on the supplementary estimates.
