In the presence of 200 people, the Wanganui mobile dental clinic, the lust of its kind in the Dominion, was declared open on Saturday. The condition of Mrs. .Tames and her two children, under treatment in the Caol< Hospital, showed no change during last night and the early hours of to-day.

Charged with exposing Jice-infested sheep for sale at the Matawhc.ro saleyards on .Tunc 22, Phillip Percival, of Waipaoa, was fined £1 and costs 12s by Messrs. John Jackson and W. 'Hamilton Irvine, J.Ps., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. The inspector of stock, Afr. J. D. Anderson, prosecuted on behalf of the department.

The Mayor of Wairoa, who is at present visiting Wellington, has advised that as a result of an interview with the Public Works Minister, lie has been informed that work on the new Wairoa courthouse will be put in hand as soon as possible. Plans and specifications for the work are now' being drawn, and it is proposed to call tenders shortly.--Special.

The view that the, tariff concessions granted by the Government toward reciprocal trade with Great Britain were in no way commensurate with the generous treatment received by the Dominions in the past, and fear that the economic life of New Zealand might he. jeopardised by the policy of self-sufficiency as embodied in the recent tariff revisions, were expressed in a motion passed by the Waikato executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at a meeting in •Hamilton.

A vote will be taken among members of the public visiting the Auckland Horticultural Society’s spring show to obtain an opinion as to which of New Zealand’s native flowers is most suitable to he adopted as a national flower. A similar ballot was taken in Wellington recently, when the order of favoritism was kowliai, polmtukawa, manuka, clematis and rata. It- has been suggested that similar votes should be taken by horticultural societies throughout New Zealand.

A narrow escape from drowning was experienced by Mr. Michael Lennan, 54, a well-known fanner of Hikuai, near Thames, when his half-ton motor-truck was swept downstream in flood waters as he, was endeavoring to cross-.the Waiawa ford at the loot of the Coroglen Hill. Heavy rain had fallen, and when Air. Lennan wits halfway across the stream a sudden surge in the flood waters caused the truck to overturn. Mr. lonnan, who is a powerful swimmer, jumped clear, and struggled ashore.' The truck, which became completely submerged, was recovered next day.

This statement is reported to have been made to the Canberra Mothercraft Society by the senior medical officer of the Commonwealth Health Department, Dr. Cilento. When the population had reached the number staled, 8,500.000, there would,-he said,- be no hope of adding to the population, except by immigration or invasion. Mothercraft. which was an attempt towards national survival. had become a factor of outstanding importance to the community.
