TRADE CONDITIONS IMPROVE.

Sales tax collected in the Dominion during July amounted to £168,662, the highest figure for any month except January, when £187,649 was collected. the June total compares with a dccnn.se of £67 ? between June and July. 1933. It appeared that this was due i< improving trade conditions counteracting hi unexpected •seasonal decrease. Imports, most of which were .subject to the tax, bad shown a buoyant tendency in 1974. compared with 1933. Reference is made to the increase m mports during July, which is claimed In bn the outstanding feature of trade tntistics for - the month. Imports dining Julv were valued at ; l.t 70 in sterling! or £2, 867,C00 in Nev. ? on'arm urrency. This value was the highr i •ecorded since February, 1 93 1 . and \va--65 per cent, higher than in June. It was evident that business activity as a whole had not slackened to the normal seasonal extent between June ana July. Normal seasonal influences were apparently being offset to a large extent bv an upward cyclical movement in busi ness conditions.
