BASKETBALL

THURSDAY’S GAMES

RAIN DISTURBS FLAYERS

Basketball games on Thursday were somewhat marred by the unfavorable weather conditions, the showers disturbing the players so that the teams did not give such convincing displays as usual.

On Saturday only R grade games were played, as with the exception of a playoff between Tuis and H.S.O.G. A, the Saturday competitions for the season have been completed. St. Mary’s G registered a convincing win over H.JS.O.G. B by 18 goals to 9, this being largely due to the accurate shooting of Misses Keane and V. Sefton. Play was inclined to be ragged, and as eaeli side fielded only seven players some long and wild passes w r ere the result ; in consequence some excellent opportunities were ‘given for interception, and Misses E. Fitzgerald and Z. Prendergast did some good work for the winning side. H.S.O.G. have a good defence player in N. Brodie. and Miss M. Gunn is better in the goal third than in defence, as was evidenced when the team was changed around. Fast play was seen by the sideliners on a few occasions and some good movements were inaugurated. A good game was played by the winning team, Ormond, who scored 11 goals to Olympic’s five. The winning side’s goalies and centres are good and exihibited sound tactics, but the defence did not seem to be able to settle down. Olympic have some good material, and with a little more combination should do well. Miss J. Muirhead seems to be following in her sister’s footsteps and has the makings of a good defence player. The game was fast at times, and from the spectators’ point of view was an interesting display. Harriers defeated Rovers by 12 goals to three, and at times played very well indeed; their tactics made Rovers play a defensive game for the whole of the first spell, and also for most of the second. For Harriers. Miss G. Cook was right in form, jumping well and shooting with accuracy. The defence was very sound and combined .well, but tbo centres arc not quick enough in taking advantage of openings made by their defence. Rovers, on the other hand, arc strongest in the centre and exhibited good foresight. The score was a very fair indication of Saturday’s strength of the teams, but there is no doubt that Rovers are a much improved team, and if they keep together should do well next season.
