FATALITY AT MIROMIRO
MILL HAND’S DEATH (Herald Correspondent.) It was reported to the Wairoa police on Friday that a tragedy had occurred at the mill owned by Messrs Thomas Bros, at Miromiro ‘ (Tuai), the victim being George Charlton, 25, single, a sawmill hand and a native of Cumberland (England.) On receipt of the information, • Sergeant McGregor, accompanied by Constable Tuck, and the coroner, Mr V. E. Winter, J.P., proceeded to the spot to make investigations.
It was learned on arrival that the deceased did not turn up to work at the usual time in the morning, and a messenger found the door barred on tho inside. On looking through the window tho messenger saw the deceased lying on his bed with a wound in his right temple and a riffs leaning against the bed. The messenger reported the matter to the mill manager, Air L. 11. Nisseu, and the police were communicated with. At the inquest, Thomas Charlton, a brother of deceased, who also occupied the whare, stated that he rose first that morning and started for the residence of Mr Gibbons, where they had their meals, leaving deceased in the act of getting out of bed. That was the last time he saw the deceased alive They had always got on well together, and deceased at no time gave any idea that he was likely to commit suicide. The deceased was engaged to «i young girl in the locality, and they last parted company on good terms. Michael Cremmis and L. 11. pS’issen gave evidence to the effect that deceased had been employed at the mill for about three years, and had been always bright and cheerful. J. A. C. Gibbons also testified as to deceased being always bright and cheerful. Constable Tuck gave formal evidence and the verdict was of suicide while temporarily insane. The funeral took place on Saturday.
