FANCY DKESS DANCE IHerald Correspondent.) A highly successful and well attended fancy dress ball was held in the Matawai Hall on Friday under tho auspices of the local school committee. Much thought had been given to the arrangement of a programme consisting of folk dances, sihguigj, games, and other dances which were much appreciated by the onlookers. The splendid performance of the children amply rewarded the teachers for their efforts. Miss Scholium proved an efficient accompanist. The children held the floor till 10 o’clock, when a delicious home-made supper was served for them by the ladies .of the district. The supper tables were artistically decorated with spring flowers. The young folk in fancy costume included —Babies. Margaret Petersen (sun flower), Beryl Great bach (Red Riding Hood), Dulcie Nevennan (early Victorian), Billy Petersen (Little Boy Blue), and May Rob (Alice in Wonderland). Primers.—Betty Dower (tennis court), Lily David (witch), Laurel Greatbach (Self Help), Rollo Currie (pierrot), and Rex Pedersen (pirate). Std. I.—Dot Taylor (buy British), Lyall Stewart (Red Riding Hood), Nora Seymour (chrysanthemum girl), Maureen Pedersen (butterfly), Cecilia Dower (Tinker Bell), Tony Robb (pierrot), lan Greatbach (baker), Barry Currie (drummer), and Jimmy Ashdown (cricketer). Std. ll.—Joy Robb (ivy), Eileen Dower (Japanese lady), Jocelyn Caul ton (fairy), Ken Fleming (Robin Hood), and Rex Greatbach (The Sweetest Thing). Std. 111. —Dorothy Ashdown (Japanese firi), Clive Pedersen (golliwog), John eymour (clown), Ray McDonald (Red Indian), Baden Greatbach (Aladdin), arid John Pederson (bandit). Std IV.—Claire Vainly (old fashioned lady), Phyllis Dower (Irish colleen), Trevor Calcott (tin soldier), Cliff Calcoit i oil ate), Murray Pedersen (Jack Tar), David Thompson (cowboy), and Jim Pedersen (pierrot). Std. V.—Eileen Scholium (Irish colleen), Eileen Pert (pierrette), Rose Nelson (patriotic), Iliki Clark (Captain Blood). Std. Vl.—Betty Davenport (Queen of Hearts), Clive Ashdown (Indian chief), Eric Pedersen (Don Bradman). When the children’s programme was completed, the adults took the floor and dancing continued till an early hour. Music" was supplied by Mrs. Lette, Misses Mortleman, Scholium. M. Korte, and Mr. C. Korte. Mr. R. Mortleman ably carried out the duties of M.C. BASKETBALL MATCHES In spite of drizzling rain and a slippery ball, two very interesting basketball matches took place on Saturday afternoon. The first match, refereed by Miss Allen, was between Motu and Rakauroa resulting in a win for Motu, the score being 7 —5. The Motu team consisted of Misses K. Hutchins, captain, B. Fisher, S. Twistleton, Q. Johansen, B. Hutchins, D. Donaldson, M. Fisher, P. Twistleton and K.- Beaufoy. Rakauroa ■ was represented by Misses L. Beaufoy, captain, K. Shaw, M. Tombieson, R. Smart, R. Austin, E. Innes, E. Smart, M. McMillan, and G. McMillan. The second match, , Homebrook v. Matawai, was won by the latter by 17 to 5. Miss Gibson acted as referee. The Homebrook players were:—Misses H. Lovell-Smith, captain, A. Jacobs, J. Murray, M. Jacobs, A. Korte, M. Shepherd, Mrs. Sefton, Misses J. LovellSmith and M. Shepherd. The Matawai team included:—Misses D. Scholium, captain, F. Moffat, M. Ashdown, M. Calcott, B. Emmerson, E. Pert, C. Neverman, M. Smith and L. Fielder. Afternoon tea was provided by the Rakauroa and Homebrook players.
Misses M. Farrow and A. Gibson Spent the week-end as the guests of the latter’s parents. 1 Residents of the district extend their deepest sympathy to Mr. T. Drake in his cecent sad berwwment.
