THEFTS OF WOOL

FARMERS’ UNION’S ANXIETY The anxiety with which farmers are awaiting some action to he taken to put a slop to wool stealing was revealed 'at Feilding at the meeting of the Wellington central provincial executive of the Farmers ’ Union, when the executive agreed to urge that an amendment he made to the Stock Act to 'provide that all dealers in wool shall register the name and address of vendors of wool and sign a book recording the sale. The question was brought up by Mr Bradley, who spoke of the large quantity of wool stolen from farm sheds during the past 12 months. It was almost impossible, he said, to trace these thefts because there was no obligation on the part of buyers to record the purchase. There was an obligation on the part of dealers to make a record of the purchase of skins and hides, but not of wool, and all that was required was an amendment of the Act to place dealers on the same footing as second-hand dealers. If this were done the police could refer to the records and perhaps catch those responsible for these thefts. The meeting decided to support the proposal.
