W.I. &.GARDENING CIRCLE t (Herald Correspondent.) The sun shone brightly on Thursday lor tli© combined meetings of the Women’s Institute and Gardening Circle, there being 11 members present. The morning .was devoted to that wonderful hobby, gardening, presided over by the convener of the circle, Mrs. jderthelsen. The roll call, the most original verse on the garden, was responded, to by many present, some verses oeing very good. The competition, the naming of a collection of flower leaves, taxed the brains of members, the winner being Mrs. W. McGuinnis with IS out of 20, which was very good; she was presented with a nice prize for her effort. The convener then distributed seeds and plants to members. Many hints and suggestions on the art of gardening and the growing of seeds were discussed. Luncheon was then served by the hostesses around a blazing log fire, all spending a happy social hour with chatter. The institute ode opened the afternoon’s meeting, which was presided over by the president, Mrs. Swarbrick. An apology for absence was received from Mrs. Howarth. A dance is to be held later in the month. “The roll call” was a book for the library, all members responding with' a volume. The competition was for the best pot of dark jelly, first place going to ■ Mrs. West, nlrs. Swarbrick being second, and Mrs. G. Torrie third. The delegate, Mrs. Bertlielsen, gave her report on the annual conference held ift Wellington. The report was most interesting, especially the sidelights, and as the delegate has a real sense of humor she kept her listeners in peals of laughter. The president thanked her on behalf of the institute for the jolly report and hoped many more members would be able to make the trip next year. Afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, Mesdames Fleming. Berthelsen and Borst. The rest of the afternoon was devoted to a most interesting demonstration by Mrs. McGuinnis on the art of pastry-makingi, and was followed with interest by all members. As ’•v-making is to be one of the com-r-titions in the near future, the house>.,<s will be busy trying their hands in G* art.* A hearty vote of thanks was nVsed to the demonstrator for her insfv’jctive lesson. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. All voted it a jolly day.

H. Berthelsen. acnmpanied bv her small daughter, Val, has returned Herrin after an enjoyable holiday spent in Wellington and Wairoa.
