—♦ REVIEW BY MEAT BOARD ‘ < 1 ( RAISING OP PRICE LEVEL : In view of many misconceptions of the actual requirements of the Ottawa agree- , meat regarding meat, the following extract from the New Zealand Meat Board's report is published with a view to throwing some light on the subject: — “The following table sets out the agreed Ottawa programme in regard to. the maximum quantities of foreign meat allowed to he imported into tho United Kingdom during each quarter of the period from January 1, 1933, to June 30, 1934, expressed as percentages of the quantities imported in the corresponding quarters of 12 months ended Juno 30,

“It will lie noted from the above statement that the progressive increase in the quantitative restrictions of frozen mutton and lamb and frozen beef reached its maximum on April 1, 1934, and for the quarter commencing from that date and thereafter for the remainder of the period of the agreement foreign supplies of mutton, lamb, and frozen beef are reduced by 35 per cent, as compared with thq corresponding period of the year ended June 30, 1932. “In addition the British Government arranged for a voluntary restriction of 10 per cent, in chilled beef from the Argentine. “Further, under the United Kingdom's bacon scheme, the importations of foreign bacon were subjected to cuts making a total restriction by November, 1933, of 37 per cent, to 40 per cent. The first step was a voluntary arrangement "restricting the imports of foreign bacon by 15 per cent. This was arranged with the Continental countries in November, 1932. Later, legislation was introduced under the Agricultural Marketing Act by which the British Government restricted foreign bacon by 15 ppr cent., increasing to 25 per cent, by July, 1933. “It is important to remember that the agreed policy at Ottawa had for- its definite objective the twofold purpose of raising the prtco of meat to a remunerative levtfl, ; >4d of progressively increasing the share the Dominions in the United Kingdom market.”
