LOSS TO AUCKLAND
MR. WILLIAM ELLIOT PUBLIC 1 BENEFACTIONS (Per Press Association.) ■ AUCKLAND, last night. By the death of Mr. .William Elliot, of Epsom, which occurred at Townsville, Queensland, on Tuesday, Auckland has lost one of its very fine type of public spirited citizens. % Aucklanders owed to Mr. Elliot the Winter Gardens in their gresent greatly extended form, but his latest generous benefaction to the city .was concealed under the veil of anonymity. It is now, however, disclosed that the offer made two months ago to the City Council to provide £IO,COO for appropriate entrances to the Domain cam® from Mr. Elliot as another token of his regard for the city of h|s adoption. That sum has been set aside in trust to be utilised in accordance with plans approved by his architect and by the City Council. Mr. Elliot was born in Roxburghshire 76 years ago, and with his brother George, now Sir George Elliot, he was in business as a publisher in Glasgow. Coming to New Zealand in 1891, the brothers, Wiliam and George, went to Tauranga, where they engaged _in flaxmilling, and bought the Bay of Plenty Times. When they left Tauranga some years later, it was to come to Auckland and establish the business of W. and G. Elliot, financial agents. The deceased was a director of Messrs. Milne and Choyce* and of Leyland, O’BrifU ~airU'.'C , :.r~y-.TK. -up*- 4im» of hisaeatk, and he retired'some six mofiths ago from the directorate of the Auckland Meat Company.
