“PLEA FOR ARMAMENTS”
ADMIRAL CRITICISED Militaristic speeches gU- ~q * ■ ■ (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The president of the Auckland branch of the League of Nations, at a luncheon to-day, strongly criticised recent public utterances of Rear-Admiral Burges Watson. “I have never seen a plea for armaments put on a cruder and lower basis,” said the president, Mr. Willis Airey. “The whole tenor of the speeches was militaristic and pessimistic, and bolstered up the idea that war is coming, and that we must be prepared for it. It is extraordinary that the education authorities should permit such statements to be made in a country which is a member of the League. We should do all we can to counteract that form of propaganda."
