NO PRICE CUTTING AGREEMENT OPERATIVE (Por Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Cigarette and tobacco prices at cutrate stores have been increased to conform with the schedule of minimum re- ( tail prices which has been fixed by the : tobacco manufacturers and agents. _ Tlie ! increases range up to 2d per 2oz tin of tobacco. Stores whose prices are not j lower than those fixed in the schedule j, were not obliged to make any alteration'. ■ Conformity with the list of minimum f retail prices was effected in Wellington last month to deal with the’ extreme 1 price cutting there. This resulted' in'- a j suggestion that the plan should bo ex- ‘ tended throughout the' Dominion, and, ' with tho addition of further brands, this has now beeii'done. In addition to fixing the minimum re- 1 tail price, it is also decreed that- the i giving away by the retailer of matches, i cigarette papers (not already packed -in [ the tin by the manufacturers), cash ( coupons, or any other articles with cigar- j ettes and tobacco, will be regarded as ( equivalent to selling below the fixed , minimum prices. The practice of offer- ( ingi cigarettes for sale in combination with other articles, for example, offering . for sale as one parcel a packet of * cigarettes and lighter,' will also be re- 1 gavded as equivalent to selling below the 1 fixed minimum prices. . i ■ ■ - * The scheme involves cigarette and • tobacco lines made or handled by 20 ‘ manufacturers and agents operating hi 1 New Zealand.' • -p ! ..*• ;
