NEWS FILM

INFRINGEMENT OF COPYRIGHT LONDON, April 30. ■The Court of Appeal unanimously held that the recording for 20 seconds of the march “Colonel Bogey” played by a boys ’ band in a news film showing the Prince of Wales opening a hospital in Suffolk infringed the copyright. The court defined a “substantial part ,> as any part recognisable by anyone as portion of a particular piece, in which case it held that the producers must pay a fee before screening it. Newspapers were entitled to publish photographs of the proceedings, but could not publish 28 bars of the music for their readers.
