THE QUOTA QUESTION
(To tlio Editor of the Herald.)
Sir, —Will you please enable me to enlighten the public as to the truth about the quota? There are already quotas on meat exported to Britain, comparatively harmless to New Zealand through their magnitude, but connected with British arrangements with other countries. Consequently when Mr. Forbes asked the British Government whether action to reduce or abolish duties here on British goods would be met by unrestricted entry of all New Zealand goods in Britain, only one reply was possible. Mr. Coates promptly used this, through the press, as meaning that free entry of British goods would not affect a quota on dairy produce, a point that has not been raised by the British Government.' I hitve been in communication with Lord Beaverbrook aiicl he is quite positive that the Britisli public is solidly with New Zealand in the desire for absolue free trade—dutyless and quotaless. Lord Beaverbrook’s last cablegram read: “Stand firm for what you want and you will get it. British people are with you. Determined front by NeW Zealand will enable ns to bring powerful pressure on Government here.”
There is no quota question for dairy except the question deliberately forced By politicians to prepare an excuse for not giving British fair trade. —Yours, etc., ? ! ‘ ; ' A. E. ROBINSON; Provincial Secretary Farmers’ Union.
