“THE NEW AUSTRIA”
MAY DAY HOLIDAY
LITTLE INTEREST SHOWN
(Received May 2, noon.) VIENNA, May 1
The Government decreed May Day a national holiday to celebrate the “New Austria” created by the constitution.
Contrasting with former years, when the Socialists held festival celebrations?, the day generally passed off quietly, although the Nazis at Graz. Salzburg, and Innsbruck, exploded smoko bombs to mark their disapproval.
Viennese apparently boycotted the celebrations, there being only a scanty gathering in the streets to watch Dr. Dollfuss’ procession. There was a similar lack of enthusiasm throughout the country. A detachment of Italian motor-cyclists and Fascisti travelling to Vienna to participate in the celebrations was stoned by Communists at Styria, and replied with revolver shots, killing a. man. The Italians found tho roads strewn with nails, and after scores of punctures many abandoned the journey.
