At the Bournemouth temris tournament, in the, singles, second round, Crawford defeated Steelman, 6—4, 6—o, 75; Turnbull defeated Wilde, 7—5, 8— 6, 6—2; McGrath defeated Toogood, 6—3, 6—2, 6 —l; Avery defeated Lee. 6 —3, 6—l, 6—3; Boussus defeated Fyzee, 6—3, 6 —o, 6—3.; Ftijikura defeated Graves, 6—o, 6 —l, 6—2; Haro defeated Merlin, 6—o, 3—6, 6—4, 6—3; Wrenn defeated Wheatcroft, 6—2, 6—l, 6—o; Kirby defeated Peters, 3—6, 6—4, 6—4, 7—5 ; Quist defeated Billington, 6—2, 11—9, 6—l; Hopman defeated Sleem, I—6, 7—5, 7—5, 4—6, 6—l; Malfroy defeated Morris, 6—4, 3—6, 6—4, 6 —4; Perry defeated Tuckey, 6 —l, 6—4, 3—6, 6—l; Miki defeated Tinkler, I—6, 2—6, 6—2, ’6—4, 6—2; Yamagishi defeated Ritchie, 6—3, 6 —3, 4 —6, 5—7, 6 —3; Gandardowcr defeated Nishimura, 4 6-3, 6-0, 3—6, 6—l. In the women’s singles, second round, Miss Hartigan defeated Miss Thomson, 5- 6-2, 9—7.
In defeating the much-improved Stcdman, Crawford first had a run of double faults. He then found admirable form, especially backhand. Steelman was leading 5—2 in the third set, after which the imperturbable Crawford steadied and outplayed the New Zealander in every phase. Other Australian Davis Cup players nad easy victories. Avory, with a mixed game of dropshots and lobs, gave Lee no chance to use his famous forehand.
Hare, the English hope, masterfully defeated the French hope, Merlin. In the doubles, second round, (Stedman and Peters defeated Clynton Reed and Fyzee, 6—l, 6—3, 6 —3. In the mixed doubles first round, Stedman and Miss McAlpine defeated Billington and Miss Ilobson. 6—2, 3—6, 6—3; Malfroy and Miss Stammers defeated Lysaght and Miss Yorke, 10—8. 8-6.
