WELLINGTON FINANCES

REDUCTION OF RATES INCREASE IN SALARIES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Wellington City Council discussed the estimates for the year until 1 o’clock this morning. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Ilislop, stated that the surplus of £30,127 was greater than had been expected. It was proposed to apply £IO,OOO towards a reduction of rates. This would amount to approximately a 2 per cent, reduction. Six thousand pounds would be applied toward the restoration of wages cuts. The restoration, as from July 1, of half the first cut in wages and salaries would give employees an increase and a little more confidence, and, in some small degree, would increase their spending power. Mr. P. M. Butler moved an amendment that as from the beginning of the financial year a restoration of the 11 per cent, cut be made in all salaries up to and including £250 a year, but the amendment' was lost by eight votes to seven.

The estimates and recommendations were adopted.
