FROZEN BEEF EXPORTS
RUMORS OP EMBARGO RELIEVING BRITISH » . MARKET The possibility of the New Zealand Meat Producers’’ Board agreeing to withhold shipments of frozen beef to Great Britain for a period of some months is being discussed freely in the export trade, states the Auckland Herald. Recent reports from England indicate that the British Government is likely to seek a further restriction on imports ana that it will approach or has approached the Dominions.
No announcement has yet been made by the Producers' Board, which is keeping in close touch with the export position. However, a rumor is current that exports will ceease in June and that the embargo will last for some months. Under the circumstances, exporters are operating cautiously. There is very little demand for prime ox beef, the schedule price for which has dropped by about 3s to 15s per 1001 b, during the past week. Boner bulls and cows are still being bought at 11s 6d and 7s 6d per 1001 b. respectively. It is not known whether this class of meat will be affected by the embargo. There is not likely to be an interruption in shipments of chilled beef. Toward the end of last year, New Zealand ceased shipping beef quarters at the instigation of the British Government. The embargo on* that occasion lasted from August until the end of November. ,
