RODEO AT MANGATAHI

THRILLING PERFORMANCES In spite of dull and threatening weather, over 100 cars were driven to Mangatahi. Hawke’s Bay, last week-end to view the ‘‘practice” rodeo. There must have been some 500- interested spectators present as the first steer was loosed from the “race” with his rider. There were 10 riders who are “probables” for the team that travels to Gisborne iu a few weeks’ time. It will be a difficult business picking the five riders necessary; all 10 seemed capable and all seemed to have mastered the science of steer-riding. After the boys had shown what could bo done, there was an “exhibition” more or less of what the steer can do.

Tim I’overty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association has provided a challenge cup to be competed for among tho counties of Cook,.Uawa, Wainpu, Matakaoa, and Hawke’s Bay, and the initial competition takes place at Gisborne on June 4; tho second competition will take Slaco iu the district—other than Poverty ay—securing the highest aggregate of points in the first competition. Tho Hawke’s Bay team will be chosen from among the following riders:—W. Holt, H. Holt, T. Simmonds, 1). McNab, 8. McCormick, A. GloVn, from Hustings district; K. McLean, W.
