British Films in U.S.A.
AFTER scenes of tremendous enthusiasm at the premiere in New York on February Id, the British film, “Catherine the Great,” received reviews front .the press describing it as a “triumph.” The acting of Elizabeth Bergncr is described as showing genius, and Douglas Fair)milks, jun., Flora Robson :;id Sir Gerald Du Maimer are all highly praised. The Herald-Tribune, says: “The British cinema takes another notable step forward with ‘Catherine the treat,’ and describes Miss Bergner’s thrilling combination of emotion, loiieslv and technical brilliance.’ ” 'The New York American devotes ;\\u columns to its review, saying: •The lilm proves that the dynasty of London films, lifted to the cinematic throne by the ‘Private Life of Henry fill,’ endures and flowers full in Catherine the Great.’ It is a triumph. )ur salutations to the victors. All he praise lavished on the technical ‘xcolleiieics of its distinguished prolerossor may be reiterated for it.” February Id also saw the New York production of “ Richard of Bordeaux.” it. is hailed as “an amazingly line iristocratic contribution to the stage,” .1 ml as a play of the kind which proves that “the spoken drama need never tear the movies. ” The critics, however, agree that the New York protaction does pot compare with that of London, and that from the “tepid performance” it “loses some of its subtlety and speed,” becoming unduly leisurely for American tastes.
